In line with Argentina’s border reopening, American Airlines, one of the major United States airlines, confirmed that they will be operating the total number of flights they had before the pandemic as of November 1st. The flights will be from Dallas, New York, and Miami to Argentina, and there will be many available seats for North American tourists.

This announcement was made after the meeting held in the USA among the INPROTUR’s Executive Secretary, Ricardo Sosa, Haydee Blanco, American Airlines’ Regional Director for the United States, Latin American, Central America, Guyana, and Surinam, and Duncan Paterson, Argentina and Uruguay Sales Manager. The INPROTUR’s Director of Tourism Promotion, Hernan Vanoli, joined Sosa, with members of the air-commercial development technical team.

Therefore, American Airlines will operate four daily flights: two from Miami, one from Dallas-Fort Worth, and one from New York to Ezeiza International Airport. According to what the American authorities informed Sosa, every destination will have the same number of seats and frequencies they had before the pandemic. This shows the airline’s commitment due to Argentina’s excellent sanitary and institutional situation and the decision to work steadily on inbound tourism to our country.

Sosa stated that, during the meeting, “details of the frequencies were provided. We have agreed on the forthright view of working towards fostering the arrival of North Americans to Argentina. We understand that, apart from the flights, the important domestic connection network American has in the USA will enable Argentina’s presence to become more extensive for internal destinations, strengthening the possibility of increasing the number of tourists there was before the pandemic.”

Sosa added that the meeting in the USA “is part of the management work we are doing as per the strategy implemented by the Minister of Tourism and Sports of Argentina, Matías Lammens. With this, we want first to ensure we have the same number of flights as we did before the pandemic and increase routes and frequencies. In the case of American, we have come to an agreement to get back 100% of flights from these three destinations. This airline is highly interested in supporting Argentina’s international tourism reactivation, and our presence in this northern country confirms their and our commitment.”

Sosa added, “Argentina’s border reopening to the world strengthens tourism reactivation and confirms what we have been working on: airlines’ support, tour operators’ expectations to sell our country, and tourists’ desire to travel to Argentina once the sanitary situation allows it. Today we are standing at the door of this world reopening. So, the INPROTUR, as Argentina’s private and public sectors’ representative, is working on different markets, strengthening and showing the commitment on international touristic activity recovery”.

Ricardo Sosa, INPROTUR’s Executive Secretary, Yanina Martínez, Secretary of Tourism Promotion of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, and Dr. Ricardo Pahlen Acuña, Dean of the Faculty of Economic Sciences of the UBA, today participated in the presentation of the International Marketing Plan and First Wine Tourism Economic Observatory.

This event took place in the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. The president of the Argentine Viniculture Cooperation (COVIAR), José Alberto Zuccardi, the vice-president of the Argentine Chamber of Tourism (CAT), Fernando Gorbarán, and tourism companies’ representatives were also present.

The Executive Secretary carried out the event opening, who expressed, “We are pleased to present this International Marketing Plan and First Wine Tourism Economic Observatory. We believe that, with the INPROTUR, we have to continue pursuing this line of work designed according to data and information validation with academic involvement, alongside institutional and private sector participation.”

Sosa claimed, “As the organism in charge of Argentina’s promotion and positioning abroad, we think that these two elements are better supported when there are academic bases, when private sectors’ representatives participate, and, of course, when they are carried out from the National Government.”

Pahlen Acuña celebrated the observatory creation in conjunction with the Faculty of Economic Sciences. “We are here today because we believe the academic aspect in the observatory will be beneficial for all. We think wine tourism is a very important part of our tourism. This work among a ministry, public and private organisations, and the university is for sure significant. From the Buenos Aires University and in particular the Faculty of Economic Sciences, we want to express our readiness for the observatory and any other undertaking carried out to serve our society.”

COVIAR’s president expressed, “There is an endless number of wine tourism alternatives. Despite the hard blow caused by the pandemic, we are moving forward. We export wine, but also our country’s image and a cultural product.”

Zuccarid added, “We think this job is very interesting. Our slogan is ‘wine brings us together.’ And this is what it is all about: tourism highlights this; it brings us together. So, I think it is essential to have an observatory in which we can analyse trends and guide the decision-making processes. In addition, an international marketing plan provides us with a tool to work in a highly powerful activity.”

Fernando Gorbarán celebrated the meeting and said, “We have to celebrate the creation of the observatory. For the CAT, wine belongs to the Argentines’ DNA. So, it is very important to measure the impact of this activity on Argentinian tourism. We need wine because we sell it to the world as one of the tourism promotion values.”

The Secretary of Tourism Promotion of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Yanina Martínez, gave the closing words, “This union among the Ministry of Tourism, the INPROTUR, that is to say the Government, private sectors, and the university is fundamental to be encouraged and make this post-pandemic recovery successful.”

Martinez claimed, “Argentina keeps working strongly on this sector. The wine industry creates around 385,000 job positions in the country. Wine tourism is an activity we sell to the world through the INPROTUR. It can offer, import, and generate job positions.”

In the context of the recent border opening for neighbouring countries, Visit Argentina runs a strong campaign on the streets of Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Chile, and Brazil.

Before the pandemic, the neighbouring countries’ market represented 65% of the inbound tourism of Argentina. As we are geographically close and have developed strong bonds with our neighbours, they travel around our territory and visit our destinations.

With the recent border opening to travellers from neighbouring countries in the first place (and to the rest of the world as of November 1st), there are great expectations in general and even greater for the promotion of Argentina’s touristic offer.

For these reasons, and with the aim of reactivating inbound tourism and coming back to pre-pandemic levels as soon as possible, Visit Argentina started a significant positioning of Argentina’s destinations on the streets and buildings in Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia.

The INPROTUR’s Executive Secretary, Ricardo Sosa, pointed out, “If our tourism promotion was very strong in spite of the difficulties caused by the pandemic, our efforts will be greater and more extensive with the border reopening. With these promotion actions, we are boosting Argentina’s positioning and making it more visible so that tourists who are considering travelling again prioritise our destinations.

This work is arranged as follows:

  • BRAZIL: 291 promotion actions set out in São Paulo, Río de Janeiro, Curitiba, Florianópolis, Brasília, Salvador, and Recife.
  • CHILE: 68 promotion actions set out in the city of Santiago de Chile.
  • BOLIVIA: 88 promotion actions set out in the cities of La Paz and Santa Cruz de la Sierra.
  • PARAGUAY: 47 promotion actions set out in the city of Asunción.
  • URUGUAY: 50 promotion actions set out in the city of Montevideo.

This campaign is incorporated into the management to recover the larger number of flights to our country as soon as possible. Thus, it is important to mention that more than 140 weekly frequencies are already operating in neighbouring countries with several airlines, such as Aerolíneas Argentinas, Latam, Air Canada, Gol, Flybondi, and Avianca.

In addition, it is worth acknowledging the digital promotion work, which quadrupled the monthly growth and took on major importance during the pandemic. Actions included virtual meetings of Argentina Travel Talks on the Visit Argentina Instagram page, the #viajadesdetucasa campaign motivating travellers’ dreams, Momentos Argentinos, and the renewed website argentina.travel, among others.

Argentina finishes the year with more than interesting openings and offers due to its geography and wide natural areas, key for post-pandemic tourism. We are close, and we are looking forward to welcoming every tourist from all over the world.

Ricardo Sosa, INPROTUR’s Executive Secretary, met Eastern Airlines’ Regional Sales Manager, Patricia Gutierrez, in the USA. New Miami–Argentina route proposals were presented, highlighting the possibility of operating a triangular flight from this North American city to Iguazú and Tucumán and other options, such as direct Miami–Ezeiza flights.

The meeting took place at the Consulate of Argentina in Miami, where the INPROTUR’s delegation, including the Director of Tourism Promotion, Hernan Vanoli, manages Argentina’s positioning and promotion abroad. They are precisely seeking to increase the air connectivity to our country, as per the guidelines of the Minister of Tourism and Sports of Argentina, Matías Lammens.

Among the non-neighbouring countries, the leading source of tourists to our territory is the USA. Besides, Americans are among the tourists who spend in dollars to a larger extent in Argentina.

On behalf of the airline, Gutierrez stated, “I am very pleased that we had this meeting with the Consulate of Argentina in Miami and to see Argentina’s aims to incorporate new air routes.”

In this sense, she added, “We are sure that these starting dialogues will be very successful since we are now aware of the proposal basis for companies, such as Eastern Airlines, to include flights from Miami to Buenos Aires or to other destinations, such as Iguazú and Tucumán.”

Sosa commented that this proposal “is based on a study carried out for the air-commercial development of new touristic destinations. Thus, suggesting a new triangular flight from Miami to Iguazú and Tucumán will make these two Argentinian destinations visible for markets, such as the south of the USA. In addition, we are also including the possibility of keeping boosting Tucumán’s commercial development with the use of aircraft holds for loading and exporting.”

He specified that, during their stay in Miami, they’d carry out air-commercial management meetings and gatherings with the media and tour operators to go deeper in the technical and analytical work to foster inbound tourism of this sector. Sosa stated, “The challenge is to make Florida and neighbouring states’ market a true source of tourists to Argentina. We are sure that this goal will be attained in the medium and long term with the airlines already operating and these new coming opportunities.” These ideas will be developed in the subsequent months.

Eastern Airlines, which already knows the route to Argentina as they operated repatriation flights from Miami, plans to include regular flights to Latin American and to receive new aircraft by the middle of next year. This will enable them to have flights to a larger number of countries, which fits the guidelines of making the Argentina market visible to tourists of this USA region. This airline is focused on the North American market, particularly for leisure.

Argentina presented its local tourist offer in the trade show, holding 15 meetings with the main French trade referents, with views to its border reopening for world tourists as of November 1st.

The relationship between France and Argentina, with historically great cultural affinity and understanding, has found new means of expression during the trade show Top Resa 2021. For four intensive days, the main trade show actors were glad to meet again after the virtual encounters due to the pandemic. Different plans and strategies were agreed on for the new coming phase.

Ricardo Sosa, the INPROTUR’s Executive Secretary, stated, “The French market is crucial for Argentina since it is the second source of tourists that come to our country. We aim at regaining, and of course increasing, the 2019 numbers. We believe we have a very attractive tourist offer regarding nature and culture —two aspects French people look for.”

Argentina set up a stand in the America Sector, where its tourist offer regarding the reopening as of November 1st was presented. Besides the INPROTUR delegation, private sector representatives also attended the trade show, including receptive tourism, entertainment and destination agencies, like Bariloche.

The INPROTUR agenda included meetings with French airlines, such as French Bee, Corsair, and Air France, to foster the development of new routes to increase the travellers’ flow between these countries. In addition, meetings with the most prestigious local media, such as Le Monde, L’ Equipe and Le Figaro, were carried out to present Argentina’s positioning programme and coordinate joint actions. Lastly, there were also encounters with many outgoing travel agencies and tour operators, including TUI Francia, ODIGEO, Tierra Latina, Alma Latina, Les Maisons du Voyage, Havas Voyages, Ponant and Mister Fly. One of the tour operators who met with Visit Argentina representatives said, “Argentina has a very good image in the French market.”

IFTM Top Resa is an international trade show for the tourist trade, mainly French. The main local actors from different tourism segments, such as business, leisure, groups, MICE and events, gather in this show. During four days, trainings and conferences are offered in order to show the changes, tendencies, and news of the market. More than 1,700 brands and 34,000 tourism professionals attended previous editions of this show trade.

During the event World Routes, meetings with seven airlines were held, including Air Transat from Canada, Neos from Italy, Spirit Airlines and Jet Blue from the USA, Virgin Atlantic from the UK, Viva Air from Colombia, and Etihad Airways from the United Arab Emirates.

The dialogue among the world route planning managers and international tourism organisms has been opened. The ultimate aim? Increasing the flow of travellers to different destinations within the post-pandemic reactivation framework. This was the mood of the World Route Event, held from October 12th to 14th in Milan, north of Italy, which the INPROTUR assisted.

The INPROTUR’s Executive Secretary, Ricardo Sosa, claimed, “The overall assessment is highly positive. We looked for airlines strongly interested in operating flights to our country in the short and medium terms. In this way, we will be opening new routes and connections so that more travellers can come to Argentina and enjoy its enormous and endless touristic offer.”

Meetings with four major airlines were held at the beginning, and three others on the last day.

The first one was carried out with the Canadian airline, Air Transat. In such encounter, the possibility of opening the Montreal-Buenos Aires route for the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023 was discussed.

The British airline, Virgin Atlantic, is specially focused on the leisure segment and its second line for long-haul flights. The INPROTUR’s Aero Commercial Advisor, Hugo Díaz, commented, “Virgin Atlantic directors are evaluating South America destinations for next year, such as Rio de Janeiro and Buenos Aires, with the possibility of operating from their hub in London with their new aircraft Airbus A350.”

With Etihad, known as the world’s most luxurious airline, the possibilities of operating to South America again were explored. This way, the region’s two main destinations, Buenos Aires and Sao Pablo, would be connected with Abu Dhabi within the next two years.

The North American most awarded airline for its efficient and high-quality service, Jet Blue, expressed its interest in knowing more about opening routes to the End of the World from 2023 or 2024, when the Airbus A321 Neo XLR (Extra Long Range) is incorporated into its fleet. This aircraft would be able to make direct flights from Fort Lauderdale to Buenos Aires.

There was also a meeting with the Italian company Neos, based in Milan and focused on outgoing tourism from the north of Italy. This is highly significant for Argentina since 60% of the travellers come from that region. New discussions will be held in order to provide them with more information about our country and its attractions for Italian tourism.

The low-cost Spirit Airlines company was also part of the agenda. This airline may operate from Florida to Salta, Jujuy, Tucumán, and Iguazú, which will continue opening these destinations to the world. During the World Routes, the INPROTUR also met with the Viva Air planning manager. This Colombian airline will operate the new and promising Medellín-Buenos Aires route from 2022. This fact becomes a landmark for both countries and anticipates a great flow of Colombian travellers to Argentina, as there were no direct flights before.

Itapemirim, the new Brazilian airline, has confirmed its interest in operating flights to Argentina. This occurred after the meeting between the INPROTUR’s Executive Secretary, Ricardo Sosa, and the company Commercial Director, Fabiano Oliveira, during the Abav Fair 2021 in Fortaleza, Brazil.

Sosa and the Argentine delegation travelled to Brazil in order to foster the air commerce development. In that setting, the meeting with the Brazilian airline took place. This company is considered a key element in Brazil’s land transport system and has recently launched into the air commerce field with success.

Sosa points out that, during the meeting, the company representative was taught about Argentina’s touristic potential. Also, they provided details of the management strategies that can be followed to keep reinforcing the connection between these countries.

Oliveira showed great enthusiasm about the possibility of operating flights to Buenos Aires. “We’re opening new destinations within Brazil, but the challenge of operating to Buenos Aires thrills us. We’ll be there soon.” He also highlighted that we could be the company’s first international flight and that they could use a newly acquired plane.

The negotiations will continue the following days, and they bring forward the airlines’ decision to invest. As it will be recalled, the INPROTUR had already negotiated with Viva Air in Colombia. Some months later, this company officially presented its flight scheme, one of the first concluded negotiations in that respect.

Last weekend, the INPROTUR, together with the National Embassy of the European country, organised the Argentine Embassy Golf Cup in Rome. The Ambassador Roberto Carlés was present at the event, which aroused strong interest in the Italian market.

After the difficult moment the world went through due to the pandemic, we start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with great expectations. In particular, Argentina tourism is in a great position to start reactivating its tourist offer thanks to its privileged geography and powerful nature.

These high spirits were perceived last weekend in the Italian capital during the Argentine Embassy Golf Cup. Apart from the collaboration of the Argentine Chamber of Tourism (CAT) and the Head of Tourism Promotion in the Embassy, Vanesa Di Martino Creide, the following national destinations were also present: Jujuy, Salta, Córdoba, Villa Cura Brochero (Córdoba province), Bariloche (Río Negro province), Villa la Angostura, San Martín de los Andes (Neuquén province), Puerto Madryn (Chubut province), El Calafate (Santa Cruz province), and Ushuaia (Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur province).

The Executive Secretary of the National Institute of Tourism Promotion (INPORTUR), Ricardo Sosa, said, “With this type of events, the country gets stronger in one of the main European markets for our incoming tourism: the Italian market. Also, it focuses on the upmarket tourists, with high purchase power, who every year look for comforting experiences as those our destinations offer”.

This meeting represented a significant possibility to make sport tourism and gastronomy more known. The historical alliance between Visit Argentina and PGA Tour Latinoamérica was pointed out, as well as the more than 300 golf courses in our country, 25 of which welcome world tourists. As for the gastronomy, the guests, local press, and more than 30 tourism operators could taste the excellence of our dishes, such as the locro, Argentinian asado paired with national wines, and raspberries with chocolate from the south of our country.

It is worth pointing out that the Cup first-place award was an Air Europa flight ticket from Rome to Buenos Aires. As November 1st is getting closer (the date that welcomes world travellers to our country), Argentina starts bragging about the beauty of its destinations and invites tourists to travel around our six regions.

The Argentine Ambassador, Ricardo Alfonsín, on behalf of the INPROTUR, received a prize awarded by the fair organisation entity, IFEMA. Visit Argentina’s great work was valued, and its stand was recognized as the fair’s best and most sustainable stand.

The Argentinian presence in FITUR 2021 was more than special this year, since it represented coming back to a face-to-face participation in the fairs after the problem the pandemic brought about.

There is more: the national participation, with a complete agenda, was highly productive. The European trade expressed its interest in promoting Argentinian nature, and our innovative stand was awarded a prize for the best and most sustainable stand at the fair.

Such recognition was reinforced during the FITUR 2021 prize-giving ceremony. The fair organisation entity, IFEMA, gave the corresponding trophy to the Argentine Ambassador in Spain, Ricardo Alfonsín, who assisted on behalf of the INPROTUR.

The Ambassador Ricardo Alfonsín claimed, “This is a prize for our creativity, sustainability awareness, and respect for the environment. At the same time, it is an incentive to Argentinian tourism, which has positioned itself thanks to its privileged geography and numerous natural spaces.”

The INPROTUR’s Executive Secretary, Ricardo Sosa, pointed out, “We are proud to receive this recognition after such a difficult year for the world and, especially, for the tourism industry. FITUR 2021 represented Argentina’s coming back to a face-to-face participation in fairs. Thanks to the team’s effort, this participation was highly positive.”

This boosts Argentinian tourism in the framework of the border reopening to world travellers as of November 1st. Nature, sustainability, and above all, people with awareness make this country an ideal destination for the activity reactivation.
